The 16-year-old schoolgirl Svea Kloosterhof, who hails from the Netherlands, joined a new crop of models on this past fall season’s runways. Having walked for Calvin Klein, Prada, Nina Ricci and Roland Mouret, to name only a few, she says Chanel was her favorite. “The atmosphere backstage and the feel of the show is just so relaxed. And the show itself is always impressive!” Kloosterhof appeared on the Dutch fashion scene after she was noticed by an art photographer who was a friend of her parents. “My mother agent saw the pictures on the Dutch social network Hyves and invited me to come meet her in Amsterdam. So I did, and she signed me.” What’s next for the super model? “Not too much for the moment,” Kloosterhof says. “I’m too busy with school!”

Svea Kloosterhof has charmed her way into New York from her native Holland this week. It’s not surprising when you meet the upbeat and elegant PYT. Kloosterhof, who was a Calvin Klein exclusive, chatted with us about her hippie chic style, Johnny Cash, and her big moment.

ELLE: Tell me about being a CK exclusive.
SK: You do all the looks—I almost got on every single look that was in the show—and they adjust everything. At one point they didn’t like a dress and there came all kinds of patterns and fabrics. I gained maybe 20 pounds of fabric, because they were putting so much fabric on it. It’s an amazing experience because you get to get contacts inside of Calvin, like the designer, the stylist—you get contact in a way you don’t get at castings.

ELLE: How have you been keeping your energy up this week?
SK: If you do nothing and you just wait around, your energy drains away. I keep myself active, maybe in my head, or by doing school work. Listening to music is a good way for me to keep up my energy level. Something rock, or if you’re in a sensitive mood, maybe Johnny Cash. Obviously you also need to eat and drink enough. There was one girl only eating salad everyday, and I was like “Oh my gosh how are you doing this?” You need some sugar, you need a little bit of fat, you need all kinds of stuff to get your energy up.

ELLE: What do you like to snack on?
SK: In Holland we have this cookie called Sultana’s—it’s got raisins in it—and it feels kind of healthy when you eat it, but it’s sugar. It’s a energy-upper. It’s my snack I always carry it with me.

ELLE: What do you like about being in New York?
SK: I just love being here. It’s amazing. I’d never seen a skyscraper before I came here so I was amazed by all the high buildings. I loved Soho, all the old things like the wooden windows, the doors, everything. I love just New York itself. And especially being at Calvin Klein everyday, walking along Times Square to go to Calvin, just those little moments, that was my big moment.

ELLE: Did you have a favorite look from Calvin?
SK: The very last dress. The golden, shiny one. I put it on for looks and just thought it was insanely gorgeous! The fabric is amazing, and the dress design...

ELLE: What do you like to wear off-duty?
SK: I had on ripped up stockings yesterday and cut-off red jeans. I wear all sorts of things. But when I’m in school, I’m the hippie. I wear long dresses in the summer, headbands, things like that. Just a little bit out of the ordinary.

ELLE: How do you like to wear your hair and makeup?
SK: I just like my hair being normal. Maybe blow dry it or iron it, I like my hair just as it is, a little bit curly. And makeup? Just mascara. I don’t like girls who are puffed up. Sometimes lipstick though, like a red cherry lipstick.

ELLE: What are your beauty tips?
SK: Drink enough water. It’s great for your skin, hair and your body. And another tip is when I feel happy, and I look in the mirror, I always see myself more beautiful. So if you’re happy inside, I know it’s a cliché, you look beautiful on the outside.

ELLE: Have you had a favorite moment this week?
SK: Well the moment that the dress was made on me. I mean I was standing there for one and a half hours. It was painful in the shoes, it was painful in the feet, but having the dress made on me, that was kind of an honor. It was kind of cool. So that might be my top moment. But obviously the show, was the big moment.

ELLE: Do you have any tips for new models?
SK: Be yourself. You can change yourself into what you think other people might like, and I tried that, and it doesn’t work. You need to stay with your own feelings. Don’t change yourself for someone else.

Famous for
Long giraffe-like legs, witty and relaxed attitude, endless energy, intelligence & ambitions, and of course her many editorials and campaigns shot by some of the worlds best photographers.

She was born in Bussum, a small town near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.

When she was 15, she received a message over Hyves (a Dutch version of Facebook) from her mother agency Code Management. Judging from the pictures she had on her profile, the agency saw a great potential in Nimue. Not much later she had her first editorial in the Netherlands.

Her big break came in September 2008 when she exclusively walked the Prada spring 2009 show.

In Paris, she opened the Miu Miu show and she went on to shoot the Prada campaign with Steven Meisel, who also shot her for Italian Vogue.
In the same season she appeared in editorials in Dazed & Confused, Vogue UK and Numéro.

Style.com named her one of the top 10 new models to watch in March 2009, after her first full show season.

Once again Steven Meisel shot her for a campaign, this time it was the fall 2009 Alberta Ferretti campaign. In the same season she also became the face of See by Chloé.

Spring 2010 was another succesful season, with only-girl Giorgio Armani and Anna Sui campaigns to add to her career highlights.

Between all the shoots and shows, Nimue was still attending high school, following education on the highest level possible in the Netherlands.

Looking back now, she thinks her agencies have played a very important role in managing her career in such a way she could still attend school. She also thinks her mother agency helped her a lot with inspiration for photoshoots in the beginning.
They would ask the client what they had in mind and sent her some pictures or a movie with examples for that specific mood or personality.

She graduated in June 2010 and moved to New York not long after that.
At the moment she's modeling full time and she's now fronting the Mulberry and Givenchy fragrance campaigns.

Also she just shot various editorials for Harpers Bazaar, Vogue America, Another Magazine and more.

As for the future, she has always dreamt of becoming a vet and of traveling the world. The last part is a dream come true at the moment. She's trying to decide what she wants to study, and veterinary medicine is still a possibility.

Never leaves home without
Her bag, mobile phone, wallet, lipgloss and a hair brush.

Public style
Casual with a chic twist, mixing designer with vintage and less expensive brands.

Private style
Jeans and a tshirt or sweater. When no one 's watching big fleece sweaters, ugly but so comfy.

For shoes I'm a big fan of Acne and Givenchy and my favorite bags are by Céline, Mulberry and Proenza Schouler.

New York is an amazing city to live in. She's still discovering and trying out new things every day.
At one point in her life she'd love to live in Paris to learn to speak French (more).

Wayne Sterling of Models.com interviewed the lovely Nimue for Spur Magazine, read the interview below.

Nimue Smit was that instant sensation two years ago when she debuted in fashion as a Prada/Miu-Miu runway exclusive. Her wide eyed child brand of beauty certainly put her in the advance wave of the gorgeous new Dutch models like Patrica can der Vliet and Mirte Maas who were beginning to flood the runways and the editorials. But what set Nimue apart and certainly what ushered her straight from the runway to the Prada SS09 campaign as well as the Alberta Ferretti (FW09) and Armani Collection (SS10) campaigns was an extra polish of sophisticated grace. Extremely well educated, articulate and witty (with a talent for mimicking a wide variety of accents in a wide range of languages) Nimue is a distinct sign of fashion's current need to highlight girls who bring an intelligent understanding and a wider cultural value to the act of modeling. Fashion has always been about the fantasy of high style as a life style. Beyond just beauty and a sleek slim body (all of which Nimue boasts) the myth of fashion is also about the ideal of perfect diction, perfect manners and cultivating a polished exterior that reflects the elusive ambiance of chic. It is exactly that aura that this 18 year old Dutch beauty exudes in person. Freshly re-located to New York Nimue sat down with Spur of the eve of the American Thanksgiving holidays and gave us a great insight to her upbringing, her ambitions in life and her passions outside of modeling. This was what she had to share. - Wayne Sterling

Wayne Sterling: Why is it that Dutch girls speak such flawless English, Nimue?

Nimue Smit: Maybe because they start us in school at a very young age. It's funny you think the english of Dutch girls is so good though. I can always pick up on a Dutch accent speaking English. There's always something a little off. In fact there was a book out that collected all the phrases with the slight mistakes the Dutch make with English.

WS: How many languages do you speak?

NS: I speak Dutch, English, I understand some French but I wouldn't say I speak it well. The same for German. But those basic four languages. In school they taught us to read ancient Greek as well as some Latin. I think if you're going learn the Romance languages like French, German, English, Spanish or Italian it's good to know the roots of your language.

WS: Wow. That's seriously impressive Nimue. Switching to pop culture, I just got an email asking what I thought of the Harry Potter movie Pt 6. I know you just saw it.

NS: I'm a big Harry Potter fan. I grew up with the books from the first one so it is very interesting for me to see the way they developed the story throughout the years.

WS: The last movie frustrated me over the point at which they chose to split the book in two parts.

NS: But at least they didn't have to cut out sections of the book like they had to in the previous films. This way they can let the story develop and be really true to the full plot.

WS: You said you grew up with the Harry Potter books... How old are you now?

NS: I'm 18. I started modeling when I was 15 in Holland and I did the Prada-Miu Miu exclusive for my first show season when I was 16. Then right after that I did the shoots for Burberry, British Vogue and Italian Vogue with Meisel.

WS: Your parents are both doctors, yes?

NS: Yes. And I have grandparents who were also doctors so growing up I was fascinated by the whole idea of going into medicine.

WS: You're not tempted to break the tradition for fashion?

NS: At one point I might go to medical school. I'm not sure yet. I just finished high school this June so this is my first time modeling full time. I'm enjoying the modeling right now and as long as I enjoy it I want to keep pursuing it. I just moved to New York on my own and I'm enjoying discovering the city. It's so different from a place like Amsterdam or Paris. Paris is so organic as a city. You can see where it started on the Seine and just spread and spread. But in New York it feels so planned out. There's nothing old here. It is hard to believe that hundreds of years ago Manhattan was like one big forest when the Dutch first came here to trade. They could take boats right up the Hudson river. But you'd never believe any of that now looking at Manhattan. I was born in Amsterdam and grew up just outside of the city, sort of between the suburbs and the countryside. It's the green heart as they call it... sort of where the houses give way to the forest.

WS: In your country, would you like to be extremely famous as a model...on the level of... the biggest Dutch girl now?

NS: That would be Doutzen. I'd say she's the most known of all the Dutch models. She's a celebrity everywhere she goes because her L'Oreal ads are everywhere but I'm not sure that I'd want that for myself. Modeling was never really seen as a big deal in Holland before, not until Holland's Next Top Model became popular. That changed it a bit... but no I wouldn't want to be known everywhere I go in Holland. I have friends who tell me that Doutzen copes with it well though. She's always polite. If she's having dinner and someone wants an autograph, she's always obliging. I have to say I enjoy going back home to Holland to visit after working. I would love to live for a little while in a houseboat in Amsterdam. That would be so quaint.

WS: How would you summarize your personal style Nimue?

NS: Well I love wearing a great sweater, probably a baggy one or maybe a jacket with very fitted pants and great shoes. I find that I'm always looking for classics and really good basics, that's basically the essence of my style. For that I love Alexander Wang of course.

WS: As all the models do.

NS: As all models do (laughs). Rodarte is just so beautiful to look at. I would love to have something of theirs'. I also love all the luxury French brands. I love my Celine bag. It's perfect to fit everything I need into it.

WS: You got it as a post show gift?

NS: Yes. It was the most amazing surprise.

WS: Great marketing move on Celine's part!

NS: Oh yes. I think it's great when designers offer trade for doing the shows and they offer you a quality piece because when the models really like something... a bag, a shoe... a dress... a coat... we will wear it constantly from city to city. It's a great form of advertising I think.

WS: I love the concept of the off-duty model. She sometimes makes you notice the bag or shoe even more than when it' s in an ad.

NS: I love the classics. Chanel. Yves Saint Laurent. Givenchy. Vuitton... You know the quality is always going to be fantastic. My style is try to mix all these things together with my basics to create something timeless.

WS: You're not very heavily into accessories like jewelry it seems.

NS: Not a lot and not unless it really means something to me. I wear a ring that I got from my grandparents. This watch was from my grandmother who passed away. So I like that the few pieces of jewelry I have are very special to me.

WS: And what's your current listening Nimue? Models always have the best musical tastes.

NS: I just saw Le Roux in concert. She's really good live. I also like a lot of the old music like George Harrison and Bob Dylan... The Beatles.

WS: Who are freshly out at iTunes!

NS: Yes I'm so excited!

How old are you?
I'm 16

Tell us about your passions, obsessions and favorite old fashions
I love writing and being with my friends and boyfriend. Modeling is a passion to me as well, though it's work at the same time. I just love fashion. I adore the way people dressed from the 20's throughout the 70's. You can find every style in my closet. For example, I'm a big fan of the 50's inspired dresses from the fall/winter Louis Vuitton collection. But most particularly I love the 70's. The long flowery dresses and headbands, but also because of the people that tried to achieve freedom, although it wasn't always the smartest ways they tried to go about it...

Most played songs on your ipod?
Johnny Cash - Would You Lay With Me / Ain't No Grave / Cool Water (and many more of his songs)
Fleetwood Mac - I Loved Another Woman / Black Magic Woman
Goldfrapp - Train / Twist / Ooh La La

What are we allowed to wake you up for in the middle of the night?
Chocolate, although sushi is lovely too!

What do you like about modeling?
All the people and networking. It's not an easy job, even if most people think so. It's always a challenge to find the right angle and mood, working with the photographer to get the picture, and when you get it, it's just amazing!

What has been the best experience so far?
Going to South Africa to shoot with an elephant, that was the most amazing experience ever.

Where would you like to go?
I'd love to go to Japan. My mum and I have always wanted to go to travel and see all the gardens, fields and little houses.

How did you get in touch with Code?
I worked with an art photographer and put those pictures online at Hyves. Code sent me a message and asked if I would like to come see them in Amsterdam, that's how it all started.

What was your first impression of Tokyo?
I am so tall!

What's the strangest thing you've seen?
First, heated toilet seats. And one time at 4.30 in the morning I saw some guys in a garden trimming plants with the smallest scissors I've ever seen!

Best Japanese food?
A Japanese pancake (okonomiyaki), it's so good. They make this pancake on a grill with vegetables and then you choose to eat it with fish or chicken.

You love Tokyo because...
The people here are so helpful. Even if they don't speak a word of English they will still help you find your way around. Tokyo is alive 24/7, when you walk around at night there are always people around.

What was the most typical Japanese experience?
I was having dinner with friends when I experienced my first earthquake ever, I was so scared! Nobody at the table looked up and continued as if nothing happened while I was freaking out. Then the couple next to us says "Oh you mean an earthquake? Yeah that was nothing".
